What Is A CFP®

When someone enters the financial planning profession they do so either on the insurance side or the securities side of the business.  It is usually shortly thereafter that they achieve the licensing for whichever side they have not entered on.  After studying and passing either the securities or insurance exam, that individual usually gets a business card with the title of "Financial Advisor" or similar.

Most People think that all financial planners are “certified,” but this is not true. Anyone can call himself or herself a “financial planner.”  Only those who have fulfilled the certification and renewal requirements of the CFP® Board can display the CFP® certification marks.  When selecting a financial planner, you need to feel confident that the person you choose to help you plan for your future is competent and ethical.

Introduced in 1972, the CFP® certification has become the most widely recognized financial planning credential among consumers.
